Table fans have been around almost as long as electricity and it has served billions of people in keeping specific areas cool and by facilitating the circulation of air using a simple motor and, blades, and a rotating shaft. And there are more than a hundred types of fans, some being utilized for different functions.

Some of the most common type of fans are the ceiling fans, stand fans, and the desk fans or sometimes called table fans since they are designed to be put on top of desks, tables, and other elevated propped up pedestals.

The principle applied in table fans are similar to all types of fans – the fast spinning blades forces air from behind it forward in order for it places where they are not strong enough to arrive at. The air is driven in a forward direction creating a cooling effect to where the fan is pointed to.

Table fans are usually light and small since consideration is put on where it will be potentially placed – the table, where other items are also most likely placed. Table fans generally light also for easy maneuverability since you may need to change its location every now and then and its light weight allows that kind of option.

Table fans are usually made of plastic, metal, or a combination of both plastic and metal and it is up to you what to choose.

There are different kinds of table fans since they are readily exposed at home, in the office, and in other establishments and because of this, manufacturers have produced different styles of table fans starting with retro table fans, vintage table fan, 50′s table fan, 80′s table fan, 70′s table fan, metal table fan, classic table, fan funky table fan, rockabilly table fan, retro fan, retro desk fan, retro oscillating fan, retro personal fan, retro stand fan, and the retro box fan.

The history of table fans may date back even to ancient times although they were not electrically run then and it is believed that the very first ones were designed by the prehistoric Egyptians to be used in Cleopatra’s court and they were made of precious gold and feathers as the blades.

The table version was officially invented by the Emerson Works Company in 1890 and the very first table fans were really works of art with perfect and solid craftsmanship, some of them are even made of brass. Towards the entry of the 20th century, a lot of other companies began to venture in the design and production of these kinds of fans incorporating innovations such as oscillation which made the table fan more useful.

In the 1920s up to the 30’s, the fans became one of the most popular and most used business office equipment. Eventually, homes began to use fans as well to cool their rooms, kitchens, living room, the entire house, and also to allow the effective ventilation of the rooms to drive away bad odor and other unwanted smell.

Although air conditioning units have already run over the functions of the table fan, lately they are making a comeback because of various reasons one of which is the preservation of our natural resources since most air conditioners require the use of chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons to produce cold air while table fans do not.

At the same time, electrical consumption cost can really go sky high with the use of air conditioning units especially if the temperature is extremely hot since these machines use more power to try to produce a standard cold temperature based on the setting that you desire, and people, in their attempt to reduce their electrical utility cost, runs the air conditioning units up to certain time and allow fans to maintain the coldness of the room.

At the same time, still with the aim of minimizing electrical consumption cost, people install fewer air conditioning units and use fans to extend the distribution of the cold wind in certain areas of the room where the cold temperature has difficulty reaching instead of using another air conditioning unit to do that.

Some offices and homes have motifs and themes and that led to the production of the retro table fan, specifically designed for people who want to retain their retro ambiance. These retro fans can perform the functions of a regular fan and at the same time add to the uniformity of beauty of your homes and offices, or any other establishment for that matter.

Some of the most common retro table fan design includes stainless steel or aluminum blades and round metal screens or blade cages. This design is the dominant features of the 1930s table fans, some of the very first fans made and sold in the market.

During those days, the table fans that you will likely see in homes and offices are fans made of metal.  However, the disadvantage of retro table fans is that they are heavy and they can really produce quite a racket when they have already been damaged and out of proportion.

And that is the reason why plastic table fans were made because they are also durable but of a lighter composition, hence, they are easier to lift and transfer from one place to another.

Now, there are more fan variations and technology has really set in even in the manufacturing of fans. Lately, USB fans are really making quite a killing since they are more economical, powered by the personal desktop or laptop battery and they can be easily plugged directly to the USB port of the computers eliminating the mishmash of electrical wires that are very inconvenient and can cause tripping and other home accidents.

Plus, you do not run the risk of being electrocuted since they are run by batteries.

When buying a retro table fan, choose the size and weight that would suit you since you may need to transfer it from time to time. And at the same, time, take into consideration the area that needs to be cooled keeping in mind that the bigger the fan blade, the more air is moved forward.
